HerART  follows in the footsteps (or should we say “bra straps”) of No Two Are Alike, a 2007 collaborative women’s art and fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  This project was a spectacular success both in the eyes of the artists as well as for the public who viewed it.  We were satisfied that it brought awareness to the plight of breast cancer in out country, but also was a comfort to those who produced bra cups and solace to those who lost precious friends and relatives to this horrible disease.

Having artists collaborate was the single most important aspect of doing the 2007 exhibit.  Artists were asked to create single bra cups, in order that two would be put together to form the entire bra.  Over the summer we met as a group on several occasions to discuss the project, refine our ideas, build forms for the exhibition and share in our stories.  Strong bonds were formed by using this approach and also gave the project validity.  We knew at some point that we would do another project together. “No Two Are Alike”, ended with an exhibition and reception at the Stuart Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio.  The exhibit allowed for memorializing friends and relatives who lost their lives to breast cancer and a reunion for those who fought the disease and won.  A silent auction allowed the bras to find new homes and a check was sent to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research and outreach.

We called ourselves the Bra Ladies, and now the Bra Ladies are making a comeback. This entirely new project, HerART, will focus on Women’s Heart health awareness in a playful and fun manner.  We are asking women to draw inspiration from within their own hearts in order to express feelings and emotions in a three-dimensional format.  The human form will be the canvas, and what will result will be wild and zany wearable art.

This art will be walking down a runway on live models, during the month of January 2010.
